Q. My child is between 5 and 7 years old. Which early beginner music methods do you use or recommend?

A. The series of Books A, B, and C with theory exercises and Hanon exercises for beginners by Boris Berlin. Completion of the last book in the series allows the student to move on to Grade 1 Piano Royal Conservatory of Music. The program for beginners also includes examples, exercises, and pieces from the books of the school of Russian Piano with its best methods developed by leading piano teachers from the Conservatories of Moscow and Sankt-Petersburg.

The recommended lessons duration at this stage is 45-minutes to 1 hour per week with the home practice for 15 to 30 minutes a day. All students independently on their age will play small piano pieces in about a month time.

Q. My son has been playing piano and completed Grade 7. Can you teach him to play something more difficult, e.g. Beethoven sonatas or Chopin?

A. First of all, for this grade I must see a confirmed certificate/diploma with reference from examiner or you previous teacher for clear understanding a professional level of the student. Student can play Beethoven sonatas or any difficult peaces like that if he/she possesses suitable technique or is unique, brilliant or super talented pianist. Otherwise he/she must follow step by step and scrutinize the repertoire stated and articulate in Piano Syllabus, The Royal Conservatory of Music.
